Classic American Sound, New Look: CviaD designs logo for the band Works Progress Administration

Boston, MACommunication via Design (CviaD), a full service graphic design and marketing company located in Boston's Seaport District, was selected by Ralph Jaccodine Management (RJM) to create a logo for the new band, Works Progress Administration (WPA). The new logo will appear on the band’s debut album, to be released on September 15th, 2009.

Formed in early 2009, WPA was born out of the musical community surrounding the legendary LA club, Largo. Founding members include Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Sean Watkins (Nickel Cree, Fiction Family), Luke Bulla (Jerry Douglas Band, Ricky Skaggs), Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, Wilco, Sheryl Crow, Beck), Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Randy Newman), and Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Cracker).

“With the calibre of artists involved with the LA based super-group Works Progress Administration, there were a variety of options for who to work with in designing the band's logo,” said Ralph Jaccodine, President of RJM and Black Wolf Records. “RJM and WPA chose CviaD after a search for a design team that could work with a variety of strong-opinioned musicians, and get results in a very short period of time.”

WPA takes their name from Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1939 New Deal initiative, which put millions to work making buildings, bridges, theater, art and music. The original WPA kept dignity burning through the darkest years of the Great Depression.

When designing the new WPA logo, CviaD took inspiration from the themes of community, empowerment and industry. CviaD created a vintage microphone surrounded by a burst of eight colored rays to communicate the energy and excitement of WPA’s classic and iconic Americana sounds.

RJM is a Cambridge-based artist management company. Founded in 1992, RJM has worked with some of the nation's top songwriters such as: Ellis Paul, Antje Duvekot, Adam Ezra Group, Flynn, and WPA. Black Wolf Records, a 15 year old independent record label is also run by Ralph Jaccodine Management.
